The first GAA President was Tipperary native Maurice Davin who served from 1884 to 1887. There have been 36 GAA Presidents in total since the Association was founded. Many presidents have had a playing or managerial pedigree. Sean McCague managed Monaghan to Ulster success and Nicky Brennan both played and managed the Kilkenny hurlers. Joe McDonagh was on the Galway panel that won the McCarthy Cup in 1980.
Fermanagh native Peter Quinn served as GAA president from 1991 to 1994 and he is credited with being the brains behind the redevelopment of Croke Park. Kerry are the most successful county in the history of Gaelic football but, remarkably, Sean Kelly was the first GAA president from the Kingdom when he served from 2003 to 2006. He oversaw the historic move to open Croke Park to soccer and rugby.
